Fasillar Hittite Monument

The Fasıllar Monument is located in the village of Fasıllar, in the Beyşehir district of Konya. Also known as the Wolf's Cradle Monument, this giant statue is one of the largest rock monuments in the world. It lies on the western slope of a small hill south of the village. The monument, which dates back approximately 3,500 years, was commissioned by the Hittite King Muvattali. It was carved into a 20-square-meter face of a giant rock measuring 2.25 x 2.75 x 8.30 meters and weighing approximately 72 tons. It consists of two gods, one major and one minor, and a pair of lions flanking the lower god. The monument is thought to depict the Battle of Kadesh between the Hittites and Egyptians. The lack of detailed carving in some parts suggests it was intended for erection in a location visible from afar. A copy of the monument is on display at the Ankara Museum of Anatolian Civilizations.
