Esrefoglu Mosque (UNESCO)
Located in the city center of Beyşehir, it is one of the oldest structures of the Seljuk Principality period. It was built in 1134 by the order of the Seljuk Khan Sultan Sancar and later rebuilt in its current form by Eşrefoğlu Süleyman Bey in 1297. It is still open to worship and visitors. The 7-century-old mosque has a special place in the history of Turkish architecture because it is the only wooden mosque where many decorative arts such as stone, brick, tiles and colorful painting were used together and intensively. Built by Eşrefoğlu Süleyman Bey between 1297 and 1299, Eşrefoğlu Mosque is known as the largest of the flat-ceilinged mosques sitting on wooden pillars. One of the important features of the mosque, whose secret to its ability to survive for 7 centuries without decay despite being made of wood is unknown even today, is the 4-5 meter deep well called "karlık" in the middle. It is thought that the snow cover was built to prevent the mosque from decaying. It is believed that as the snow filled with snow gradually melts, the moisture prolongs the life of the trees inside the mosque. (Source: Konya Governorship)
